Wound Care Instructions

Please follow the proceeding instructions to minimize risks of infection or complications stemming from your recent procedure in our office.

Leave the bandage in place for 24 hours and keep the area dry.

After 24 hours you may shower and you should begin daily dressing changes.

  • Gently cleanse the area with mild soap and water. If showering, you may allow the wound site to be exposed in the shower.
  • Gently pat the wound site dry.
  • Apply Vaseline® or Aquaphor® Healing Ointment. We do not recommend the use of Neosporin®.
  • Reapply a clean bandage.

Any time the bandage becomes wet, change it. Be sure to apply ointment first.

Continue steps 1-3 (step 4 is optional after 2 days) until the wound is healed. Healing times are approximately 1-2 weeks for biopsies of the head and neck, and 2-3 weeks for biopsies of the body.

In the case of stitches, continue steps 1-4 until they are removed.

If bleeding cannot be stopped, apply direct pressure for 15 minutes.

Pathology Results

After 1 week has passed since your procedure, please call the nurse’s line if you would like the results of your biopsy and have not received a call. If there is no answer, please leave a message and the nurse will call you back.
